Below is the syllabus for our off-campus ISU class, Introduction to Kickboxing. Classes run
August 19th, 2024 through December, 2024 on
Tuesdays and Thursday from 1 pm to 2:15 pm.

Introduction to: punches, kicks, elbows, knees, footwork, rules, fundamentals / progression of technique, strategy, and safety in the sport of Kickboxing. Safety first. This is a contact class where students will learn how to properly hit and perform defensive moves. Students will NOT be getting hit themselves. Gloves will be provided on a loan basis for each student, however you may purchase / bring your own boxing gloves. No MMA gloves allowed.
1. To understand the fundamentals of Muay Thai Kickboxing so students have an introduction into the sport and self-defense aspects.
a. Kickboxing: Kickboxing is an effective combination of aerobic conditioning, self-defense and strength training.
b. Equipment: We will be using boxing gloves, heavy bags, punching targets, kicking targets and our bodies.
c . Class Format: each class will consist of a warm-up, review, new concepts, heavy exercise and a brief Q&A session.

3. Kickboxing fundamentals and progression of technique and skills (with anatomical targeting.)
4. To learn, execute, and demonstrate the fundamentals and progression of the sport.
5. To provide individuals with a fun atmosphere for learning and activity.
6. To appreciate and incorporate the activities of self-defense and fitness into our lives.

2. Participation is required (see attendance/grading policy).
3. Students are required to dress appropriately for the class activity (see dress code).
4. Physical Education Assumption of Risk and Release and Phoenix Kickboxing Waiver forms completion is required PRIOR to participation , no exceptions.
5. STUDENTS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE WITHOUT BOTH RELEASES AND MAY LOSE PARTICIPATION/ATTENDANCE POINTS.
6. Students may borrow "loaner" boxing gloves from Phoenix Kickboxing. All equipment must be sanitized at the end of each class.
9. Participation in an assessment is required for the final.
ISU Attendance Policy (Undergraduate Catalog): Students are expected to attend all meetings or classes in which they are registered. Students who do not attend any sessions of a class during the first week, and have not made prior arrangements with the instructor, may be dropped from the class.
SSPE Dept. Policy: All attendance will be taken by the instructor on ISU grading sheets. All Activity classes will be held through and including dead week. All make-ups , exams, and assignments must be handed in to your instructor by the last day of dead week, no exceptions. All instructor grading will be finalized during finals week.
Attendance is mandatory. PEAC policy stipulates there are no “excused” absences. Attendance is required from the day of registration. Classes missed for athletic and other university sponsored activities are still counted as absences. If you feel you have special circumstances, it is the student's responsibility to discuss them with the instructor AHEAD of time, whenever possible. These will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis. It is the student's responsibility to contact their instructor immediately following any absence, for makeup work, and to determine if their individual instructor may allow it. In the case of emergencies, it is the student's responsibility to communicate with the instructor immediately. Attendance also includes being in class on time and for the entire time that class is held.
*Adding past Add/Drop (student online accessed) Final Date: Students will not be added to class after the final date. Students are able to add/drop online. Any exception must be approved by the PEAC Coordinator. *
*Adding within Add/Drop (student online accessed) Final Date: Students who miss the first day of class, with the syllabus introduction, OR add within the final add/drop date online must sign the “PEAC Syllabus Statement of Understanding “ form.*
Students may only attend the section they enroll in, no exceptions. In the event the particular section conflicts with the student’s schedule, the class must be dropped and the student must enroll in a class that works with their schedule.

3.0 Pts. Per attendance & participation (32 classes =96 pts)
ABSENCES: Two make up absences will be allowed, which must be completed within two weeks from the day of the absence. No exceptions. This is made up by attending another Kickboxing Bag Class at Phoenix Kickboxing.
ARRIVING LATE OR LEAVING EARLY: 3.0 points for attendance / participation may not be earned if the student is over 10 minutes late or leaves before the end of class.

Students are expected and required to dress down and participate each class period. Proper activity attire is required (i.e. Comfortable clothing, t-shirt, sweats, etc.) All classes will occur on martial arts mats and all students must be bare foot. No shoes or socks are allowed.
Street clothes are not acceptable for activity classes. Lack of proper activity attire will count as an absence.
Continuous respect and courtesy for each student is expected by all. Therefore, NO ELECTRONICS (Example: headphones, or cell phones) are allowed in class. Turn off ALL ELECTRONICS BEFORE entering the activity or teaching area. Students who are being inattentive, ignoring or abusing this policy will be asked to leave and will be marked absent for the day.
1. Children and / or guests are not allowed in class. Guests may observe.
2. Students are encouraged to bring water and remain hydrated during all activity classes.
3. Students are required to adhere to all activity safety rules, issues, and precautions. Contact and competitiveness is at the Instructor's discretion ONLY. Bullying, intimidation, harassment or any other kind of behavior which the Instructor finds unacceptable will not be tolerated. Any student abusing this policy will be asked to leave and will be marked absent for the day.
4. In case of instructor illness or poor weather, classes will be scheduled to meet at the instructor’s discretion. Communication for any cancellation for this course will be posted on the course site or Moodle only (not email), the student is responsible for constantly reviewing the site for communication.
Activity technique classes involve inherent risk. With that in mind, all SSPE activity class students are required to read and sign the “Assumption of Risk and Release” form and the Phoenix Kickboxing Waiver PRIOR to class participation, NO EXCEPTIONS.
STUDENTS MUST RUN “ASSUMPTION OF RISK AND RELEASE FORM “ OFF OF COURSE MOODLE SITE AND BRING IT TO THE FIRST DAY OF CLASS. This waiver must be printed and signed, no electronic versions are acceptable.
STUDENTS MUST ALSO FILL OUT THE PHOENIX KICKBOXING WAIVER ELECTRONICALLY BEFORE THE FIRST DAY OF CLASS.
STUDENTS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE WITHOUT BOTH RELEASES, AND MAY LOSE ATTENDANCE POINTS.
NOTE: THE ISU FORM MAY BE RUN OFF FROM THE SSPE WEBSITE, LIABILITY.
The first 5 weeks of class will include instruction and practice in: jabs, crosses, hooks, lead and rear round kicks, elbow strikes, knee strikes, clinches (head control) and footwork.
