Please reach me at john@phoenix.fitness if you cannot find an answer to your question.
Absolutely. No previous martial arts or fitness experience is necessary; We pride ourselves on being able to work with beginners. Additionally, beginners work on punching bags, so it simplifies the learning. We also have gear for you to borrow.
When you come in for your first class, make sure you pace yourself. You have a week to try the classes, and you can always go harder the next time.
We have loaner gear for all trial members. Just make sure you wear workout clothes and bring water.
Getting started is easy— simply schedule your free trial. Set up your starter class by clicking on "Free Trial" above. Fill out our waiver or have a parent fill one out for you if you are under 18. Then go to our "Schedule" and decide which class you would like to start with. When you come in for your first class we will have time to go over goals or limitations you may have.
If you have specific questions or concerns we recommend you message those to us BEFORE your first session so we can address those right away.
All you need are workout clothes, though you’ll most certainly want a bottle of water to stay hydrated.
Once you’ve experienced your first class, you’ll have a great idea of what you can get from working out with us. That’s usually when we will get even more questions. Also let us know what you thoughts are and how you liked the class. You're welcome to join at any time, and can do so by clicking "Join" at the top of the page.
Remember, if you decide to join, start getting all your gear in place. We do retail most of the equipment you would need. But you can purchase most gear where ever you prefer.
Just regular workout clothes—though, there are some specific things you’ll want to avoid. Snaps and zippers can be a big problem when doing kicks and such, so definitely avoid those.
If we are doing any kind of grappling, such as Jiu-jitsu or Wrestling then I would avoid tank tops and sleeveless shirts. Shorts are also a bad idea since you can get a friction burn from the floor.
We don’t allow street shoes or socks on the work-out floor, for health and safety reasons. Additionally, we sanitize all bags, gear and mats every time they are used.
Absolutely. With martial arts and fitness, you can’t start too early. And because children learn and develop so quickly, it’s amazing to see the positive impact it can make on them.
We also offer a free one-week trial for children.
Never! We have worked with 4 year olds and 85 year olds. All classes are structured to allow people of all ages to work at their own pace and ability. Nearly every client we have worked with has had some kind of limitation. Our job is to find the most effective way to work around those limitations.
That being said, joint issues (such as elbow, knee and back) can limit you or even become aggravated with any new work out. If currently have any joint issues, feel free to reach out to us at "Contact Us" where we can discuss your concerns. Sometimes private training is a better option when you have limitations.
With the right trainer, martial arts is definitely a controlled-risk activity. Safety is highly emphasized at Phoenix, and we want everyone to work at their own comfort level. We have made our classes accessible for the average person that wants to learn martial arts and kickboxing for fun, fitness, and self-defense.
It is not uncommon to experience soreness. Not just muscle soreness like any other workout, but soreness in the shins. If you are unused to shin contact, your shins may become sensitive or sore. So start light!
